why photography..

Growing up I had a mother who was absolutely obsessed with taking photos. Everything, anywhere, always. She would go for drives, where I’d tag along just to explore and take photos. Especially when we visited my grandparents small town of Arichat, Nova Scotia (population around 4 thousand) The amount of lighthouses I visited with my her, the number, I don’t even know if it exists. (probably why I have a lighthouse tattooed on me now). I remember coming home and uploading the photos she took to her ancient HP laptop that screamed for help the entire time it tried to load. She wasn’t just saying “aren’t these cute”, she was proud. She was able to capture the beauty of a moment or even an inanimate object. The look on her face, the pride, the beauty. Seeing my mother’s eyes light up as she asked “oooh, do you like this one? Ooo, Meagan look, so pretty right?” will forever be a cherished moment for me. This obsession (for lack of a better word) transitioned into my preteen self asking her constantly to take me to the nearest tree and take photos of me, she never complained. My mom still looks back on these photos, never forgetting to send them to me when they pop up in her “memories” on facebook.

This sparked something in me, interest in following my mom in her love of photography footsteps. At first I felt a bit like an imposter. “Am I hopping on this because I wanted to take it from my mother” no. I wanted to share in her joy. I started by taking a photography class in high school, learning what the “rules of thirds” is and how to use “AUTO” mode. I’ve been taking photos for a long time, being a flight attendant in my early twenties really inspired me to want to freeze these moments at beautiful destinations so my experience can live on forever. While I always appreciated the art but could never find myself happy with what I captured. This most likely comes from my wild anxiety. It took me moving to a new country and choosing a new career path to guide me into the confidence to photograph humans. Little did I know, this would be born. Meagan Senior Photography, and a passion that is steadfast for shooting people. Freezing moments, memories that are tangible.

Before I get all sappy on you, this is my dream and I can’t believe everyday that get to do it. Human beings allowing me to be a part of their beautiful moments. I am forever grateful. I’m looking forward to growing and continuing to learn.

I’ve decided to add a small collection of photos my mom has taken over the years, enjoy.
